Children’s Programming

The Essential Theatre Children’s Program in Public Schools was initiated in the winter of 1993.  The Program has maintained relationships with DC Public Schools in S.E. Washington DC, (Ward 8), traditionally the district's quadrant most often receiving less arts related services.

The general purpose of this project is to introduce students attending selected schools to the theatrical process. The program uses an interdisciplinary educational approach that supports traditional classroom curricula, and extends to structured after school programming. By offering students active participation in the creation of a theatrical event, students gain exposure to each aspect of the theatre--acting, production and management.

At its core, the Program arms students with a sense of accomplishment through assuming different levels of responsibility and working together to realize a culminating quality product. Students also experience numerous academic and social benefits.

Classroom instruction offers students activities in theatre arts that make traditional classroom lessons come alive through dramatization of traditional classroom topics such as; history, science, and math.  Additionally, the Program enhances and reinforces students’ reading and writing skills through work they produce and the writing of other classmates as well as through auxiliary materials provided.
