What’s Happening!
Beyond February
Celebrating 250 Years of American History
A Meditation…
As the Artistic Director, I feel like we led the way with our public celebration and reflections of our 250 years of contributions to deeply enriching America’s cultural landscape with our February No Ways Tired presentation – https://youtu.be/XJQlpw5aCO4
I was further inspired to iterate our Beyond February project out of a combination of amazement, perplexity and ongoing frustration with our own community’s false fortification and continued satisfaction with being appropriated our cultural contributions. By that I mean, when the federal initiative was announced regarding the celebration of America’s 250th year of independence, I was keenly aware of what that would look like. And so, when the historic images were projected onto the Washington Monument, they were exactly what I expected them to be.
What I did not expect, considering our present day-to-day “reality” check, was the disappointment voiced by many regarding the lack of contributions from diverse communities. Allow our Beyond February Project to inspire you to find the beauty of your community’s history every day, Rejoice in it and celebrate you!
Beyond February is an online celebration and appreciation through social media images chronologically posted to maintain and increase awareness of institutions, moments and people who have made valued contributions to moving America’s cultural needle.
Keep the celebration going!!!
