The Essential Theatre Color Logo Top Left Relaunching New Play Reading Series Presents A Ceremonial Reading of Rock of Ages By Iska Directed by Kaia Calhoun, MFA The 1968 Memphis trash workers’ strike serves as the backdrop on which this new play is painted. It invites audiences to observe a church of the times as it ponders the necessity of women’s voices in church business as it weighs the church’s further involvement in acts of civil disobedience following the murder of its previous pastor. The church is also grappling with addressing an out of wedlock pregnancy of a “mentally retarded” member.
